Indigenous Peoples' Day

Students learned about Indigenous People Day today!
We talked about different Indigenous communities in our region, and all over North America.
One specific tradition, within their community, that we talked about, was the Powwow. Students saw the different ways Indigenous People express their culture through clothing, dance, singing, and instruments. Their dressings had meaning, color, and intention to everything they put on. We were able to create our own type of tradition wear or jingle dress.

We also read a book called Bowwow Powwow. It was a cute connection to the traditions. In addition, the Powwow celebrated here in Grand Traverse County was shown to see a present day powwow in action and in our own community.

It was a good day celebrating and honoring Indigenous American peoples and commemorating their histories and cultures.
