Journeys: Lesson 6

This was our focus this week in language arts. Since next week is a short week, we will be continuing our work with story conclusions, homophones, proper nouns, and more. While also incorporating fun Halloween activities to learning as well!

Our anchor text this week was titled Ugly Vegetables. We  dove into analyzing the text with our Readers Guides. This is alwasy a great activity to get students to use their text as a reference when strengthening comprehension skills.

Halloween Snack

Last month, we were fortunate enough to send one of our staff members to a conference on teaching healthy food choices. This conference gave ideas on how to build a healthy, and strong school community through healthy eating habits and physical activity. The second-grade team has decided to take a few of these new ideas and incorporate them into our classrooms. Once a month, for the next few months, we have decided to try flavor palates. We will be offering a festive, and healthy snack for our students at their snack time.
Please click the link below if you are willing and able to donate a few tasting items to our healthy snack palate for Halloween!

STEM Project

Last week we started a STEM project with our learning buddies. This is going to take two to three class sessions to finish. We began reading the story Room on the Broom and will use that story as a fun project.

Currently they are in the planning process to build a broom with their group members. The scientists will soon be ready to create!
We are in need of a couple different supplies if anyone is out and about and would like to donate.
bags of mellow creme pumpkins
bendy straws

The students are going to be putting the straws together with tape and then testing out their structures with the pumpkins. This will begin this Wednesday afternoon if any supplies could be in by then. I am sure your child could also let you in on a few more details as well :)
THANK YOU!

Journeys Lesson 6

Hello Unit 2!!
In our new unit, students are going to be pushing their thinking and using new skills and strategies to grow as readers, writers, and even speakers.
We have two new anchor texts this week.
Animals Building Homes
Whose Home Is This?
Genre: Informational Text
Some key objectives derived from this text will be identifying text and graphic features and using content to determine meaning of unfamiliar vocabulary. They will also be comparing and contrasting animals and their homes in both selections and using text features as subheadings in bold print to clarify the meaning.

Journeys Week 5

Within our last lesson of Unit 1 we have two new texts.
Teacher's Pet
Genre: Realistic Fiction
We are reading as well as practicing to identify the problem and solution in this realistic fiction text. The story demonstrates the elements of a story's structure through both the words and the text, using a familiar topic. Students will be able to identify the elements of a story's structure and understand how the author's word choice creates meaning in a story.
Next time you read a story with your child, ask them to identify the characters (who), setting (where and when) and plot (what happened).

See Westburg by Bus!
Genre: Informational Text
Children will regularly encounter informational text in textbooks and on the internet. This informational text gives children experience with reading a map and applying the information to real life scenarios. Students will be able to follow information in a pamphlet and apply information found on a map.
