Last week we read a story to from Journeys about Gee's Bend. This was a story that included all our vocabulary words and where I could model fluency and expression while reading.
Gee's Bend is a group of African American quilters. This began back in the age of slavery, where women would use what they could find like feed sacks, rags, and small strands of yarn. They used dye paint to color the strips and stitched the different pieces together. The shapes and colors of these "string quilts" reminded the slaves of designs on fabrics fro their homelands in Africa.
It was a great story, with a history and a lesson involved. We extended our learning, from the story, by using different scraps we had to create our own classroom quilt!
Here is the process!
