Library

Today was our FIRST library class!

Mrs. Lane is our NEW library teacher and we are SO excited. Mrs. Maniaci is still at Westwoods, but dedicating her time more in the office. Fun fact is that they are sisters!

Students reviewed how to take care of a book and library rules. Always important. They also heard the story Stick and Stone.

At the end, everyone was able to check out a book or two. Please help remind your child any books checked out are due back the next Wednesday when we have library. If you have any books from spring or summer, please also return these books to library. Thank you so much!

Journeys: Lesson 3

Focus wall for the week! This shows what to expect for the week and what will be continuously returning throughout each days instruction and activities.

This week we are continuing to build understanding on information texts. We have two focus read alouds:

Dogs and Helping Paws
These informational text describe a familiar subject with all students - dogs! Students will regularly encounter those kind of text in textbooks, through research, and for independent reading. The text contains some how-to elements. Through our reading students will also encounter some informational text features:

captions, bulleted lists, headings, feature boxes

Our key learning objectives are to
Read to understand the author's purpose
Compare and contrast information
Learn about dogs that help people with disabilities
Understand how captions tell about pictures

Vocabulary cards this week!
Ask your child to explain what each vocabulary word is and if they can use it in a sentence.

The Fish Weir

What a fun virtual field trip this morning!
I was so excited to go down to the Fish Weir and show the students all the huge fish making their way, leap by leap, up the churning water of the fish ladder into the facility's three holding bays. Then they are caged and harvested.

This will be happening again next week. It will happen once a week for the next four weeks. I strongly encourage you to take your child or children down the next time they are doing this to check it out. I know the students were able to watch from a distance. But up close is such a better visual!

Behind the Mask

Friday we finished up our Social Studies activity called Behind the Mask. Students came up with an assortment of character traits that described themselves and who was behind the mask they have to wear. They created a drawing of themselves with and without a mask and then added in their character traits to show their inside and out personality. Very cool how they all turned out!!
* I did remind the students not to get rid of these. When are face to face I want them to bring these to school to display. Please have your child keep these in a safe place until then.*
Thank you!

Art Link

In my e-mail yesterday, I mentioned Mrs. Gang would like for you to join her Art Google Classroom instead of giving you a direct link like PE and Music.

We did have art today, and will again next Thursday. Today students followed my directions as I walked
everyone through joining her class. If for some reason they need another go at this, then the link is here for you. Click on her link and then click join class. You shouldn't need a code, but if for some reason you do, here is a code she provided.

If you have any other art questions for Mrs. Gang here is her e-mail. gangtar@tcaps.net Click for Art Google Classroom
Class code dww25kc

Thank you for being flexible!

Math

Work at School

Students have been revisiting addition and subtraction with math mountains and fact families. This is continued learning from first grade and something we will build on in second grade. Students are doing a great job moving forward in math!

Work at Home
Students solve different equations with the unknown as a partner or a total. Have your child explain what the unknown is and how to turn around an equation using fact families to help.
5 + ___ = 13
OR
13 - 5 = _____
After solving, see if they can continue to rest of the fact family equations.
