CKLA Knowledge: Immigration

Students explore the idea of e pluribus unum and the importance of immigration in the history of the United States—with a focus on the great wave of immigration between 1850 and 1920. They learn reasons why people immigrate and why they settle in certain cities and regions. In learning about citizenship, students are introduced to basic knowledge about the Constitution, including the Bill of Rights.

Demonstrate understanding of key vocabulary
Cite evidence from a text when answering questions
Make connections and sequence information to deepen comprehension
Collect information from Read-Alouds and synthesize it into short summaries
Plan and draft a story describing a character’s life as a new immigrant in the United States

CKLA Listening: Poetry


WHAT'S TO COME ABOUT THE WORLD OF POETRY
Learn about its elements to interpret poems.
How words and phrases create rhyme and rhythm, thus contributing to their enjoyment and understanding of poetry.
Explore poetry elements, imitate strategies used by the poets they are studying, and learn to think as poets by considering how their choices influence the meaning of a poem.
Rhyming and alliteration activities
Opportunities to write poems, practice what they have learned, and demonstrate they can write just like the poets they are studying.

b) If you'd like to meet with her separately to talk about your student, sign up for a time before or after your meeting with the teacher.
c) If Mrs. Hibbard doesn't work directly with your student, consider signing up to chat informally about peace lessons and social work support in general.
d) If you don't sign up but her door is open (room 303), feel free to drop in to say hi.
