For the last three weeks we have been working with our learning buddies on a STEM project. So fun! We read the story Room on the Broom. Then we started planning, conducting and experimenting with our own broom! Students were in groups of second and fourth graders. They were only given a small amount of supplies to then build their contraption. In the end it was tested with seven small pumpkins..that they of course ate when they were successful :) Thank you to all who donated our supplies! Very fun experience!Friday, November 1, 2019

This year our classroom is participating in Book It! Pizza Hut offers a program that motivates and encourages children to find the joy in reading. The mission of the program is to turn "have to read" into "want to read!" We are rewarding their reading accomplishments with praise, recognition and pizza! They have been challenged to read for at least 20 minutes a night for at least 15 days in November.
At the end of the month if students reach their goal, and bring it back signed by both student and parent, they receive a coupon for a FREE personal pan pizza from Pizza Hut!!
At home there is even more you can do with the Book It! program. The link below is a parent link full of additional resources for families. Have fun!!
All supplies came home with your child Friday. Please let me know if you have any other questions.
Thank you!
Gallagher's Field Trip
GREAT time at Gallagher's enjoying their farm animals, corn maze, and doughnuts/cider! Especially cool to to see how apples were milled into cider. Everyone got a turn!
Awesome experience with a lot of smiles!
Back at school our afternoon continued with a fun hour of Halloween themed activities and snacks! We teamed up with Mrs. McPherson's room to mix it up. Our room we had three separate learning activities. Then in Mrs. McPherson's room the students enjoyed our planned Halloween Palatte! THANK YOU to everyone who sent in items to enjoy with our Gallagher's apples!

Journeys: Lesson 6
This was our focus this week in language arts. Since next week is a short week, we will be continuing our work with story conclusions, homophones, proper nouns, and more. While also incorporating fun Halloween activities to learning as well!
Our anchor text this week was titled Ugly Vegetables. We dove into analyzing the text with our Readers Guides. This is alwasy a great activity to get students to use their text as a reference when strengthening comprehension skills.
Halloween Snack
Last month, we were fortunate enough to send one of our staff members to a conference on teaching healthy food choices. This conference gave ideas on how to build a healthy, and strong school community through healthy eating habits and physical activity. The second-grade team has decided to take a few of these new ideas and incorporate them into our classrooms. Once a month, for the next few months, we have decided to try flavor palates. We will be offering a festive, and healthy snack for our students at their snack time.
Please click the link below if you are willing and able to donate a few tasting items to our healthy snack palate for Halloween!

STEM Project
Last week we started a STEM project with our learning buddies. This is going to take two to three class sessions to finish. We began reading the story Room on the Broom and will use that story as a fun project.

Currently they are in the planning process to build a broom with their group members. The scientists will soon be ready to create!
We are in need of a couple different supplies if anyone is out and about and would like to donate.
bags of mellow creme pumpkins
bendy straws
The students are going to be putting the straws together with tape and then testing out their structures with the pumpkins. This will begin this Wednesday afternoon if any supplies could be in by then. I am sure your child could also let you in on a few more details as well :)
THANK YOU!
