Homework & Spelling

This weeks homework packet made its way home along with a new spelling list. Students have been doing awesome with their responsibility of completing their homework on time and turning it in on Fridays! Thank you for reminding your child to find time to dedicate to further learning at home!

This weeks spelling list contains the tricky 'g' and tricky 'c.' You will see on the back of your child's spelling list how they divided up the tricky spelling for the spelling words this week.
They should be able to tell you what the two sounds are for 'g' and for 'c.' Please ask your child to fill you in!

Ancient Greece

We wrapped up Ancient China and ventured to a new continent of Europe. We are now learning about the Ancient Greek Civilization. In this unit students will be introduced to a new civilization whose contributions can be seen in many areas of our lives today. They will learn about the gods and goddesses of the ancient Greeks, the city-states of Sparta and Athens, and the philosophers Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle. They will learn about the first Olympic Games held in honor of Zeus, the significance of the battles of Marathon and Thermopylae, and the conquests of Alexander the Great. Students will also learn about the Greek contribution of democracy and how those ideas are used today in many governments, including our own.
(The content in this unit is reinforced through the fictional narrative writing genre)
Students will bring home this week brief overview of our new unit. It includes ideas for students and family to discuss with continued conversation from our listening lessons in the classroom. However, the ideas are strictly suggestions and not homework to be completed and turned in.
So far we have discussed the intro lesson: Ancient Greeks. Followed by two stories about Mount Olympus that encompass the twelve main gods and goddesses. As we venture through the new content students are also creating a family tree of the gods and goddesses to keep track of the twelve main gods and to also take notes and record evidence of what they are the god of.

This domain so far is receiving A LOT of positive feedback from the students. Definitely looking forward to the rest of this domain!

Reminders & Updates

Weekend Work...
All students brought home some weekend work! Since we are in our new unit for CKLA Skills we are diving into our new reader Kids Excel. Two stories that we have read in class and discussed are now coming home to enjoy with those outside of school. Please help your child find a new person to read their stories too. These stories can stay home for future reading and do not need to be returned back to school.
Two other pages that should make their way back to the class are
Mark the Vowel Spelling
Are the Sounds the Same?
Both pages we went over in the classroom on Friday and are also both review for all students.

PTO Meeting
Tuesday, Nov. 15
6:30 in the WW Library
Childcare will be provided!

Winter Carnival
The Winter Carnival is just around the corner on January 27th! Classroom baskets have already been assigned and are now looking for families from each room to donate themed items for their child's classroom.
McNitt's Carnival Basket theme is ARTS & CRAFTS.
Feel free to send in donations whenever you like. I will store all donations in my classroom until pickup.

Outdoor Attire
Please remind your child each morning to grab outdoor gear suitable for the weather. Especially a coat. Temperatures are up and down...gotta love Michigan weather! All students go outside to play twice a day, and they are out before and after school. We want to ensure they are warm and safe on the at school when they venture outdoors. Students can keep an extra pair of gloves, hats, scarves, etc. in their locker if they choose. Thank you!!

Math Unit 2!

Unit 2: Addition Within 200
In this unit we will be working with place value, representing numbers in different ways, and comparing numbers. We will be adding two, three, or four digits numbers, sometimes resulting in new tens or new hundreds, with sums to 200.
The big ideas within this unit include:
Representing numbers using base-ten numerals, expanded form, and word form
Visually showing numbers to 200 in different ways
Applying addition concepts and strategies to real world situations, and solve 2-digit addition problems.
Money and fluency for addition within 100

Election 2016

Voted!
Today our school had a mock election for all volunteering classrooms. We were one of those classrooms!
Pre-voting, our classroom had different discussions about the election process, voting, and the candidates. Giving the students the chance to vote today, even though it was a fictional process, gave a sense of voice for who they wanted to win our 2016 presidential election.
 * All information of both candidates was very surface with no bias either way.

Long weekend...with a little work

Since the students have an EXTRA long weekend they are coming home with a few EXTRA goodies! Three review pages are in their communicators to complete and return by Monday, Nov. 7. These are all activities they can do on their own independently.

Our classroom did a fantastic job on their Unit 2 CKLA skills assessment, which means we will be moving into Unit 3 on Monday! More details to come about our new unit.
Students also did an awesome job on their Unit 1 math assessment, so we will also be starting a new math unit come Monday! More details to come on this new unit as well.
Monday will be a big day of new content and material! Hopefully everyone will be able to get a lot of rest and relaxation these next three days before diving into another hard work week on Monday!
Enjoy the long weekend...well deserved!

For the month of November and December, we have switched days and are now doing Tuesday, Wednesday, and Fridays from 10:30 - 11:00.
I hope this will work better for some parent schedules. Students have really been enjoying this time with their book clubs and especially when parents are able to join in. If you are interested please take a look to see if any dates correspond with your schedule. Thank you!

Off the Bat!

We started our Halloween Day off with All About Bats! Students partnered up and read a festive informational text about bats, while also jotting down a few notes about what they read.
Ask your child what Off the Bat means...

Happy Halloween

Our Halloween day wrapped up with a super fantastic celebration! Thank you to all parents who donated delicious goodies, set up awesome activities, and who volunteered their time and energy to helping make the party a success! Greatly Appreciated!
I know all students had a great time! Many smiles and adrenaline pumping to kick start their Halloween evening. Hope everyone had a fun and safe trick or treating/Halloween evening!
