Math: Unit 1

We are diving in to Unit 1 in our updated version of Math Expressions!

Within Unit 1, students will:
- Master addition and subtraction problems & solve one and
two step problems.
- Fluently add and subtract within 20
- Explain why addition & subtraction strategies work
- Determine if a number is odd or even
- Solve one & two-step word problems by using drawings and equations.

The letter below came home with all students last Thursday in their communicators.
* Please note that your child will NOT have homework every night. There are occasions where I will send home homework for students and give them a nice time frame to turn it back in. Students might also have homework if they do not finish their assignments during the school day. They will bring home that assignment and I will look for it the next day. A note will be provided.
Please let me know if you have any further concerns on this.
Thank you!

Jellyfish!

We had a few little visitors today, brought in by a local family. A grouping of jellyfish were found in a nearby fresh water lake! They were brought in as a show and tell and for all of us to gawk at and ooh and ahh over. They are all about the size of a penny and not dangerous to humans....but still a little nerve racking to see so close.

The students loved the opportunity and couldn't look away! I'm sure they will be telling you about the little invasive creatures they saw today.

Postcard Exchange

I know you all saw this in my newsletter that went home during open house, but I want to send out a reminder post as well.
Our classroom has been signed up for a nationwide postcard exchange!
By Sept. 21st I would love for all students to have turned in:

* 2-3 BLANK Michigan Postcards (welcome to send more)
Postcards could be all about Michigan or any other region within Michigan.
* Each postcard needs a stamp

We are sending out are postcards to the surrounding states by October 1st.

From Sept. 21st until our send out date in October students will be writing messages to the other schools that signed up. Then we will address all cards and get them in the mail!
Then hopefully soon after that we will start receiving all our postcards from other states!! That is the most exciting part!

Thank you so much! Please let me know if you have any additional questions or concerns.

ME & WE

Today we partnered up and did an exchange of personal likes and dislikes. Student found out all they have in common and also some things that are different about themselves and their classmates. Shockingly enough, a lot of the students in here are finding they are quite similar! It was fun!
We were going to make this into a class book, but instead thought it would be fun to bring it home and share with you! There are many one word answers on their pages, so students will have to do some explaining around the conversation they had with their partner :)

Good luck to you and your kiddos for the up coming year! I will miss them greatly but will enjoy seeing each and everyone in the hallways.

I hope everyone has a wonderful summer!!
It has been such a pleasure spending the last nine months with your little bundles! Watching them grow into soon to be third graders has been amazing to say the least! I am so proud of each student as they have developed into such great people. The determination, persistence, and flexibility is a trait that strengthened in all students! Their hard work paid off and we had a GREAT second grade year! Even though I will miss each and every smiling face, I will look forward to seeing everyone right down the hall in third grade!
Thank you as well to all parents! Thank you for being part of our learning experience! Through volunteers for book clubs, chaperones on field trips, contributions and donations, and help and support from home and in other ways at school...you have helped to make a difference in our classroom and school! Thank you so much for all you do! ENJOY SUMMER!
