Thanksgiving Fun

I hope everyone had a wonderful and relaxing holiday break! Thanksgiving came and went, but I wanted to post all the fun we had leading up to the big day of thanks and feasting.
In addition to all our hard work and learning we made time for a few extra Thanksgiving activities. Hard to resist :)

Thanksgiving Thankful Book
Very awesome activity to watch the students work through. They used their knowledge of sentence structure to have two solid sentences about what they are thankful for in school, at home, outside, and even for one of the many talents they have! I hope they came home as excited as I was to share their sweet, kind and thoughtful ideas!

Place Value Turkeys
We took what we have been learning in math and made it into turkeys!

Directed Turkey Drawing
Students had to follow step by step directions as we all drew a Thanksgiving Turkey together. It is quick and structured time, where they have to focus, listen and then follow the correct direction to piece all steps together in order to make a piece of art of their own. This gives students the ability to practice listening skills and following one-two step directions to learning.
When we are done is when they get to add their own personal flare to their art!

Thanksgiving Scavenger Hunt
To teach the students more about the history of Thanksgiving, they went on a hunt! There were 18 facts about Thanksgiving that were spread around. They had clues and had to connect the clue to the fact with a buddy.

All projects came home with students the Tuesday before Thanksgiving to enjoy and to show families!

Tornadoes

Last Friday we created our own severe weather storm in our classroom: TORNADOES!
There was a lot of excitement as we built our tornadoes. Of course we added a bit of color and a sprinkle of glitter to make the spin that much more amazing!

Not only did we built a tornado, but we also walked through the whole scientific process of prediction, making a hypothesis, collecting data, and drawing a conclusion. They did a great job describing the process and interpreting what they observed. We had a great discussion on Monday to wrap up our experiment!
You should have already seen both the tornado and their findings come home to further discuss with you.

If your child's tornado is leaking by now, you can unwrap the duct tape and re-glue where the two bottles came together. I used a hot glue gun to connect the bottles and then duct taped the bottles together after the glue was dry. However, the students swung the bottles around quite a few times for our experiment to see the tornado, then I am sure did a few more swings at home. This also caused a lot of stress on the glue, making it crack a little where you will see a leak.

Homework & Math

Homework was sent home today for all students.
Please note on homework that if your child is having a hard time on any part of what has been assigned to have them circle the problem and bring it back to school for us to work on.
Thank you for all your support at home with helping you child budget their time for homework and also squeezing in reading each night! I greatly appreciate it and it is making a difference!

Homework for math this week is a friendly reminder and practice with story problems. This is a page we did not get to in our last unit, that the students could always use a little extra work on. Story problems are tricky! The more we work and read through each problem, the more we will understand the process of visualizing the story and solving the problems!
The students enjoyed working with our secret code cards in class. This is an extra set they can keep at home. Have them show you how to build numbers and also take them apart. Just like when it comes to reading words!
They should be able to show you the standard form of a number and expand it out to its own place value.

We have been working our way through Unit 2 in math!
Unit 2: Addition within 200
Students will:
Extend base ten understanding to hundreds: three digits of a three-digit number represent amounts of hundreds, tens and ones
Compute sums within 1000 using place value: use place value understanding and properties of operations to add
Become fluent with addition within 100
Explain why addition and subtraction strategies work

Veterans Day

Happy Veterans Day!
We supported this day in our classroom! The students read a great classroom magazine on veterans and veteran families. *This can be found in your child's Google Classroom.
We used this opportunity to also talk about main idea and details that link to our classroom learning. Then we followed up our conversation with writing a note to one of our nations heroes, thanking them for their service and dedication to our country and its citizens!
These letters the students wrote will be sent to Operation Gratitude, to then be sent to veterans around the country. Some students also know a veteran in the family that we will also find addresses for.
It was awesome to see the students engaged in this activity where they can send kindness and appreciation to such an important figure in our country. Some students even requested to do more than one. Great act of kindness!
Thank you to all veterans!! We thank you for all you do and sacrifice!
