Geometry

Monday we began our unit of Geometry with Shapes and Patterns.

At the end of the unit students will be able to identify and draw shapes that have specified attributes, such as a given number of angles or a given number of equal faces.
They will also be able to identify triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, hexagons, and cubes.

Within each activity students will be:
- Recognizing and identifying plane shapes and solid shapes
- Combining and separating plane shape figures and solid shapes
- Recognizing and drawing shapes having a given number of angles
- Identify and count the equal faces on a cube
- Identify, describe, extend, and create patterns using different sizes, shapes, colors, and positions (turning)

Partner Poetry

As we are wrapping up our poetry unit, students are coming to the last few poems to read and discuss in their poetry books. They are selecting different partners each day to read through poems with, discuss the elements of poetry, and then do a short activity to connect.

Book & Blanket

Every so often we will be taking reading outside. With weather permitting depends on the mornings or afternoons our classroom decides to take our books to the lawn. I gave all students the option to bring a blanket no bigger than a beach towel to use during these times. Please have it stored in a bag (plastic, canvas, paper bag, etc.) so that these can be left in lockers. We are going to try our first Book & Blanket on Friday after Field Day but before lunch. If students can bring their towels by then, and leave them at school for the next couple weeks, that would be great! Thank you!

Fraction Scoot

In wrapping up our fraction unit, students ended with a fun activity called the fraction scoot. They had 30 seconds to solve a fraction, before a bell rang to scoot to the left. They did this 30 times with 30 new fractions, and had so much fun!

Opinion Writing

Last week the students did a couple different taste tests for their opinion writing. We took a different route to throw a little more fun into the mix, with trying to persuade someone to like or dislike a couple different foods.
We are using the Oreo concept of top cookie being our lead and introducing our opinion. Middle fluff being our reasons and examples. Bottom cookie being our ending and restating our opinion. So of course, our first test had to be an Oreo. Mrs. McNitt was the ONLY one who is not a fan of the cookie. So ALL students had to try to convince me through their writing to like Oreos while meeting all their writing goals and expectations.
Later in the week they did the same idea with celery. Not as big of a hit, but more of a variety of likes and dislikes. Which also meant more conversation and convincing by peers.

WW Book Swap

To encourage summer reading, your child has the opportunity to take home new books of their interests. All students are invited to bring in gently used books, from home that they have already read.  Your child may bring in as many as 10 books.  In return, they will be given a credit for each book to use at the swap.  Each book is worth one credit.
Used books can be brought to school between May 4th and 13th.
Books are to be given to the classroom teacher.  Please make sure the books are gently used and not torn or worn.  Your child’s old book will become another child’s new book.
We are excited to offer this swap to all of our families in our school community.  This is a great way to clean out your old books at home and increase your child’s interest level in what he/she will be reading over the summer break.
Please take this opportunity to become an active part in your child’s reading habits.
