Addition & Regrouping

Last week students were adding three digit numbers while regrouping in different place values.
They were turning ones into tens and tens into hundreds.
In the process, students were able to see the visual with base ten blocks and work with their small groups or math partners to combine different thoughts and ideas. Some students pushed their thinking by finding different ways to make a number.
For instance, 348
3 hundreds 4 tens 8 ones
OR
3 hundreds 3 tens 18 ones
This helped the students to see how many ones are in a strip of ten to then manipulate the number around their place value mat. With that understanding, they could even see that 348 would also make 3 hundreds 2 tens and 28 ones.
Then students were able to take their understanding of regrouping and draw their math sentences and base tens on white boards. When students felt comfortable and were close to mastery with the idea of regrouping, they tried problems without the visual.

REGROUPING WITH ONES

REGROUPING WITH TENS

 At Home!
Ask your child about regrouping. Better yet, have them show you!
Now that they have a firm grasp on the concept, they are excited to keep exercising what they have learned!
Mad minutes sent home each week will help students know their math facts in a snap. This will help in quick recall in their ones, tens and hundreds when working with three digit addition. Instead of counting on each time in their head or on their fingers.
*Mad minutes do not need to be returned to school and can be kept at home for continued practice.
Thank you for your continued help and support!!
