Few Notes...

Homework Packet
On Wednesday, students came home with a couple different activities to do over break. This will help to keep their minds on the content we are currently covering. We went over all activities involved as a class. Students seemed pretty excited about the reading challenge. Please note that this is NOT an added activity to the Beach Bums poster. Anything they read for my reading challenge can be used for the Beach Bums poster. I just added a little fun to keep them reading :)
Please let me know if your child as any questions or concerns.
Thank you!

No School Monday, April 6th

Hippity Hoppity

Added a little more fun to our half day Thursday. Students made bunny masks for Easter. We had a good time creating each unique mask from whiskers to ears. They turned out really cute!
Happy Easter!

$$$ Money $$$$

This week we have moved away from measurement (cm, m, in, ft) and are beginning to explore different concepts with money. Second grade decided to take a different path than intended with the following chapters. Instead of moving into mass and volume, we are going to work through money, graphing, then fractions. We will be coming back to mass and volume later.
Students did an awesome job with measurement, finding the difference between lengths, solving story problems, and more, showing me they are ready to move onto the next chunk of content.
Within money students will be solving word problems involving dollar bills, quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies using $ and c symbols. They will be able to:
-Recognize $1, $5, $10, and $20 bills.
- Show and count money using coins and bills up to $20
- Write money amounts using $ and c signs
- Write dollars and cents and cents as dollars
- Compare amounts of money using tables
- Solve word problems

Field Trip

We had a great time at our field trip visiting Lars Hockstead Auditorium at Central Grade School. Alexander and the Horrible, Terrible, No Good, Very Bad Day was really great! It kept the students engaged and entertained throughout the whole show! No one even asked to use the bathroom :) It was great to see students making the connection to the book, but also seeing how the story was altered a little showing how different versions of stories can have different details.

Next Week
Next week is a short week with break right around the corner. Due to this, students will get a small break from spelling. Which means you will not see new words coming home next week. I will also NOT be sending home a homework packet. Instead, I will be sending home a few assignments to do over spring break as a way to keep their minds on the content we are currently covering. Please look for this coming home Thursday. If your child plans on not attending school any days next week due to an early departure to break, please let me know and I will send home their packet before leaving.
Thank you!

Guest Reader!

This morning we had Mr. Hardy, from the TCAPS School Board, visit our classroom. He read the story The Legend of the Sleeping Bear Dunes. It tied into our unit of folktales, fables and other stories. The students were able to have a nice conversation with Mr. Hardy making connections to the our local Sand Dunes and expressing their understanding of legends.
It was a nice addition to our morning!

Writing CeLEbRaTioN!!

Today we celebrated our final drafts in informational writing!!

So very proud of each and every one of the kiddos in class! They did a really excellent job in preparing for their final, taking all the necessary steps on their goal page. Today students shared their final draft with their peers, where they laid their books in their desks for viewing. All students were able to walk around the room and leave only positive comments on the books they read through. Afterwards students were able to go back and see what their peers thought. They took this home to share with you. They also received a little token of appreciation from myself for all the hard work they put in over the past few months. Big HOORAY to them!

Tall Tales

Recent we have been talking about Tall Tales. This goes along with our unit on Folktales, Fables and other stories. The students are really enjoying hearing the totally outrageous stories that are exaggerated and humorous. Paul Bunyan is our recent read. It was hard not to read twice! We did an activity today by creating a Tall Tale Wheel. Students worked in groups and rotated stations to gather information together about the book Paul Bunyan
1. The setting of the tall tale is...
2. My favorite part of the tall tale is...
3. An example of exaggeration from Paul Bunyan is...
4. The main idea of the tall tale is...
5. Give your wheel a cover with title and pictures
In the end, students found a partner in a different group and exchange answers and what they thought. Some students gave their wheel added details throughout discussion.

St. Patrick's Day

Second grade had a lot of fun celebrating St. Patrick's Day!!
Both second grade classrooms started their morning off with a hike. Temperatures outside were a little chillier than the recent norm. However, it was still a lot of fun to get outside and enjoy the sun!

All students split up, then partnered up, and spread out throughout both classrooms for a Lucky Charms activity inside. Students used the candy pieces to graph and tally the quantities. Students from each classroom worked really well together!

Later that morning we put together a St. Patrick's Day reading book.
We learned about St. Patrick and had a couple comprehension questions to answer in the back. Students brought this home to enjoy and read to someone else.
